AFTER A POLL HELD BY THE WORLD BOXING COUNCIL THROUGH ITS WEB SITE, IN WHICH BOXING PEOPLE, MEXICAN JOURNALISTS, INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISTS AND FANS WIRKDWIDE CAST THEIR VOTES TO DTERMINE THE WINNERS, THE WBC HAS ANNOUNCED THE BEST BOXER’S OF 2009
The distinguished Awards will be awarded at a special Awards ceremony on a date in February to be announced.
THE WORLD CHAMPION OF THE YEAR is the king of the Heavyweights, VITALI KLITSCHKO of Ukraine, with a total of three defenses. This exceeds the usual number of defences within this period of time in the heavyweight division,.
Vital; knocked out Juan Carlos Gomez and Chris Arreola in March and September, respectively, and also defeated Kevin Johnson in a very clear decision.
THE BOXER OF THE YEAR is MANNY PACQUIAO of The Philippines, WBC Diamond World Champion, and holder of the very first and historic Diamond green and gold belt.
THE COMEBACK OF THE YEAR is FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. who came back to the rings after almost two years of having retired, being the only fighter who has won five championships as well as five green and gold belts in five different WBC divisions, having faced rivals of the highest level of recognition in the world.
THE REVELATION OF THE YEAR is SAUL 'CANELO' ALVAREZ of Mexico, with a record of 30 wins, 22 of them by knockout and a draw.
With seven wins in the year and the aforementioned facts, “Canelo” has already become an idol of Mexican fans.
Tomorrow, the World Boxing Council will announce the names of the other poll winners who will also receive Awards from the WBC organization.
