THE END OF A GOLDEN ERA AND THE BEGINNING OF A BRIGHTER DAWN FOR GOLDEN BOY INC?
There should be no sadness that Oscar De La Hoya has decided to hang-up his gloves. It is an absolute correct decision and Boxingn Action is delighted. We also have no doubt it will be permanent.
It is time for ring boxing to say "Adios, mio amigo," to Oscar who has proved to be a superb disciple of ring boxing. before there is further erosion of a great boxing career.
However, Oscar is not saying goodbye to boxing.
His promoting Company the young and enterprising GOLDEN BOY INC. is already a main player in the commercial promoting of boxing events and already there are signs of revolutionary changes in the way boxers are managed and promoted.
As the top promoters like Don King and Bob Arum concede to Ol' Father Time, so the strength of new Companies like Golden Boy Inc. will become more formidable.
Therefore, it is essential the new breed of boxing promoters constantly remind themselves of the proven adage: "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."
The present worldwide banking crisis must act as a warning to all commercial boxing promotional companies on the catastrophe that comes from greed and covetnous.
Golden Boy Inc. has promised a new dawn for the commercial side of professional boxing and there is evidence that they are implementing change.
Will this change continue or will it be a brief Spring sunshine season and then a fast return to the harsh winter of the past?
We can optimistically speculate but only time will tell and give the true answer. ~
