GENNADY GOLOVKIN vs. KELL BROOK – A DISASTER WAS AVERTED!

BEFORE THE ‘BIG FIGHT’ BOXING ACTION ON SATURDAY NIGHT ASKED THE QUESTION WILL GENADDY GOLOVKIN vs.KELL  BROOK BE A DRAMA OR A DISASTER?

HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE DEICATED TRAINER OF KELL BROOK IT WOULD HAVE LIKELY BEEN A DISASTER!

The Gennady – Brook fight was sanctioned by three of the four authorities.

Whichever one is responsible for choosing referee Marlon Wright, they made a wrong call and the two innocent sanctioning authorities would have suffered more than contempt had not the conduct been exemplary of the Chief Second to Kell Brook.

The most serious of lessons have to be learned from this fight.

Promoter Eddie Hearn went overboard prefight declaring it was a smart move that will pay-off?

He was badly wrong. He is now stating Kell has a great future.

Where Eddie found the evidence to believe the matchmaking of the fight was ‘smart’ and ‘will pay off,’’ was only correct when it was viewed prefight as a business decision and its potential financial success.

From a boxing point of view no evidence existed.

To fight the fearsome Gennady Golovkin, Kell Brook had to springboard two boxing weight divisions. A wholly questionable move against a modest opponent let alone against the World champion!

BoxingAction described as probably the pound for pound hardest punching boxer in the World.

No judgement is practical on the future in boxing for 30-year-old Kell Brook until the medical all clear is given by the medical team attending upon Kell - and Dominic Ingle is reasonably satisfied Kell should return and wants to return to competitive boxing.

Anything else is speculation and, at this stage, unnecessary.

The only absolute certainty is the trainer and Chief Second of Kell Brook, Dominic Ingle a son of the legendary Brendan Ingle, has passed on to his son outstanding knowledge of coaching and training boxers, and his reputation as a corner man with an exceptional humane approach to the care of his boxers in competition.

Today, Boxing is able give a deep sigh of deep relief at the care for his boxer shown by Dominic.

When Dominic recognised disaster could be caused to Kell should another mighty blow from Gennady landing on the damaged eye of Kell, he did not wait for it to happen but instead he jumped onto the ring apron and while standing upright he leaned over the ropes and waved a white towel to signal the fight had to be stopped.

The attention of referee Marlon White was transfixed on both boxers and either ignored the calls from Dominic or didn’t hear or see them. To claim he did not see them would require generosity.

When eventually the gesticulations from Dominic and his necessary throwing into the ring of the white towel, referee Wright had to obey the command.

This was seriously flawed refereeing!

A boxing referee has to be efficient at all times a contests is in progress to make a decision and br prepared any for any eventuality, as the Gennady - Brook injury clearly illustrated. He/She has to understand the power of each boxer so that when called upon a valid judgement is able be made should a boxer be hurt by a punch or has a facial injury.

Had Gennady Golovkin landed one more power laden punch on the injured eye of Kell Brook there is no doubt a disaster would have been occasioned.

The big question is if Dominic Ingle was able to see the extent of the injury then why did not referee Marlon Wright see it was serious?

Referee Wright surely must have seen the injury and know it was caused by a punch.

His duty then was to stop contest and on his own accord, inspect the damage and, if in doubt, call for the ringside doctor to give an expert opinion.

Instead he did nothing.

It must be fully understood, while boxing is on a wave of approval due the safeguards presently in place, the anti-boxing brigade is lying in waiting for any reason to strike with venom.

It has also to be clearly recognised, without the essential changes made for boxing by the late WBC President Dr. Jose Sulaiman, boxing would be, probably viewed nowadays by the enemies of the sport as a grade, or two, above old time booth boxing.

The changes have worked brilliantly but changes for the better remain needed!

BoxingAction would have been more outspoken on the irregularity of the match prior to the fight but we placed recorded emphasis on the fact that the BBBofC, with whom Kell Brook is registered as a boxer, had given permission for the fight to be made.

This confidence was, obviously misplaced.

There is no point in the BBBofC registering alarm at the danger of other organisations offering to licence boxing promotions, when their own judgement is seen to be flawed. There is no point in the BBBofC registering alarm at other sanctioning organisations offering competition, in the UK based upon their concern for allowing boxing to take place without alleged safeguards, when they allow a welterweight boxer who spent his professional boxing career as a professional boxer, to suddenly to oppose in a boxing ring a two higher weight World champion who is considered to be the most lethal puncher in World boxing.

Judgement is always better arrived at when based upon evidence rather than speculation or bias. ~
