SHEFFIELD'S SHEEDY SHINES

Nav vs Sheedy 1

Related imageSHEEDY CAME THROUGH AN INTRIGUING, GRUELLINGENCOUNTER ON SATURDAY JULY 30 TO PUT HIMSELF IN THE FRAME FOR A FUTURE HUGE FIGHT.

Fighting for the first time at middleweight, Sheedy took on Andrew Robinson at the Rotherham Magna Centre in a British and Commonwealth eliminator and pipped his opponent from Redditch on a split-decision verdict.

Entering the ring in a sombrero and flanked by co-managers Dennis and AJ Hobson, 'Speedy' Sheedy clowned at times - much to the chagrin of trainer Glyn Rhodes - as he looked to counter the ever-advancing Robinson.

The action was nip and tuck throughout although the more accurate, eye-catching shots seemed to come from the Sheffield fighter. The pace inevitably slowed as the contest wore on with Robinson refusing to take a backwards step, and the last round saw both men tired. At the final bell, an ecstatic Sam was announced victor with two judges scoring 96-95, while the third official went for Robinson by the same margin. Now in line to fight either Commonwealth champ Tommy Langford or British king Chris Eubank Jr, Sheedy revealed afterwards he'd been hampered by a back injury throughout the contest, but was now eager to test himself against the bigger names in the division.

SHEEDY: ‘I’M A BOXING CHAMELEON AND WILL BEAT ROBINSON’

Sheffield's Sam Sheedy moves up to middleweight on May 30, when he takes on Andrew Robinson at the Rotherham Magna Centre. Sheedy, who lost a highly-controversial decision to English light-middleweight champ Nav Mansouri last year, will face Robinson in a British and Commonwealth title eliminator battle.

Evenly-matched, both Sheedy and Robinson have a single defeat on their respective 17 and 19-fight ledgers, the contest promises to be a genuine 50-50 tussle, although 'Speedy' insists he will have far too much skill and variety for his Worcestershire opponent.

“I never take note of my opponents, even in the amateurs," explained the 28-year-old southpaw. "I do what I do and, as it happens, I’m good at what I do! I’m like a boxing chameleon, I’m very versatile. Whatever an opponent brings, whether it’s power, speed or counter-punching, then I’ll adapt. So, I’ve not watched anything of him.

“I know he’s been sparring with Frankie Gavin and Jamie Cox, but that’s irrelevant to me because they’re not Sam Sheedy. It shows me he's mentally weak by having to say 'oh look, I'm sparring with these'; I've been sparring great kids and I don't have to tell everyone.

"It’s not evenly-matched because everyone knows I really beat Nav Mansouri; so I’d have been in line to box Liam Williams for the British and Commonwealth title, and I’d have won that and been at European and world level by now.

“I’ve got the mental edge because I don’t think I can be beat. I couldn’t be beat at light-middleweight and I definitely can’t be beat at middleweight. I feel so strong and powerful, and I’m as quick as I was at light-middleweight. I’m bigger, stronger and faster.”

With the winner in line to face domestic ruler Chris Eubank Jr; Sheedy says - if the enigmatic Brighton fighter doesn't relinquish – that challenging him for the Lonsdale crown would be an opportunity he'd be confident of winning.

“I’d feel fantastic competing at British level because I box better when I face a better class of opponent. You can’t fake it at British level, you’re at British level for a reason. I think Eubank will vacate to move onto world level but I’d like to box him. He’s very strong but raw and hasn’t been boxing as long as I have so I’ll have a better boxing brain. I’m a boxing chameleon, I’d adapt and I’d beat him.”

Dennis Hobson Promotions presents Sam Sheedy versus Andrew Robinson contesting a British and Commonwealth middleweight title eliminator bout at the Rotherham Magna Centre on Saturday July 30.
